Kevin Roose | The New York Times
The unemployment rate for recent college graduates has jumped as companies try to replace entry-level workers with artificial intelligence.
Cevat Giray Aksoy, Nicholas Bloom, Steven Davis, Victoria Marino, Cem Özgüzel | CEPR
The Covid-19 pandemic sparked a large and lasting shift to remote work. This column draws on detailed administrative data from a major call centre in Türkiye to show that a permanent shift to fully remote work can expand recruitment and raise productivity without compromising service quality.
Inma Bonet | EL PAÍS
Many citizens who don’t want to explain their employment status pay to rent a position in a fake office, with some even assigning fictitious tasks and organizing supervisory rounds.
The Times
Britain’s workplaces are some of the emptiest in the world, with many employees saying they’re more productive at home — but some firms don’t agree. We hear both sides.
Vibhas Ratanjee | Forbes
We didn’t just lose face time. We lost face. The small graces of presence. The cues that made people feel real to each other. I’m not here to advocate for one way of working—remote, hybrid, or onsite. Each has its upsides. And more than ever, the choice is personal.
What I am pointing to is something deeper. A sense of isolation and disconnection that many remote and hybrid workers quietly carry.
It’s not just a feeling. It’s real. And the data backs it up.
Maria D. Tito | The Fed
In conclusion, while the expansion of remote work has been clear and substantial along a number of indicators, the underlying drivers of remote utilization remain less certain. Further research is needed to clearly untangle these drivers and their long-run implications for wages, productivity, and workplace structure.
Better than Random
As you progress in your career, understanding the difference between being useful and being valued is very important. At first glance, they might look similar because the signals you get are more or less the same: a promotion, a higher than expected bonus, a special stock award. This is why it’s important to dig deeper and try to detect subtler signals.
Stay SaaSy
As people become managers, it’s quite common for their team members to want to commiserate with them. This is especially true for friendly, competent, reasonable-seeming managers – people want to commiserate with winners. This makes commiseration extra dangerous, as it comes with a hint of flattery (“I respect your opinion and trust your discretion”).
Kyle Potter | Thrifty Traveler
All three of the country’s largest carriers (American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta) are penalizing solo travelers with higher ticket prices than you can book when traveling with a group – sometimes, significantly higher.
eventfarm | Reddit
It’s good practice to remove this from your everyday speech. This is something you should say in hushed tones with your closest friends. Not out in the open amongst locals.
It’s so easy to say when you’re out with a bunch of travelers and the country you’re in is very affordable on your salary. I used to say it too until someone (a local) told me how it felt to them.
